Since childhood I have observed the natural world with eyes wide open. I have found beauty in the places I have lived, from the shores of the Great Lakes, to the farms of New England, and gardens of Minnesota. Inspired by the vast diversity of plants and living organisms, I use emotionally charged color and pattern to create rich internal landscapes and biomorphic abstractions. My paintings are meditations on my physical surroundings, expressions of the joy and wonder I feel when Iām present and aware. Focusing on ethereal aspects of nature, my forms are evocative of leaves, seeds, eggs, sprouts, rain, wind, and waves.
Working in watercolor allows me to paint freely and intuitively. The luminescent transparency of pigment on paper lends itself to layering and creating strange worlds. Each piece is a quest to find both harmony and tension between the forms and colors. Playful blues, energetic oranges and hot pinks are my reaction to the absence of color in the Iowa landscape during the winter months in which they are often created.
